History

Crest of Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth, GCB (19 April 1757 – 23 January 1833)a distinguished and dashing naval commander during the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Already celebrated as a daring frigate captain, Pellew achieved wide fame for the bombardment of Algiers in 1816 which led to the freeing of thousands of Christian slaves.
A recent biography has suggested that Pellew was the real-life model for Jack Aubrey, the fictional naval commander in Patrick O'Brian's series of Master and Commander novels.
Pellew also appears throughout the popular "Hornblower" series of novels and in "Jack Absolute" by C.C.Humphreys.
