Item Description

Georgian period silver baskets so rarely survive in first class condition and yet this example is an exception to that rule! This large basket would be ideal for presenting bread, cake or fruit and has a very cleverly worked wire-work design around the outside with interlocking hearts adjacent to both handle hinges. The swing handle has graduated basket weave ovals and is struck with a lion passant to complement the full set of hallmarks to the underside of the main body. The engraved centre of the basket features a beaver crest within foliate mantling. The basket is free from damage and repairs, although the inside base is a little scratched from use.

This basket was made by the Royal Goldsmith Thomas Heming. He was appointed to the role of Principal Goldsmith to the King in 1760 and held the post until 1782. This basket was made during that golden period and is illustrated by the crown surmount to his "TH" in script maker's mark.
