Item Description

Here is a superb pair of antique export Chinese armorial porcelain tureens. They have beautiful golden armorials, with unusual lion and salamander motifs, painted both sides. Lovely swags of hanging flowers to the borders and bright orange detail to the handles. Stunning pair. Although with crack/chips. this fine pair display beautifully.

These probably bear the arms and crest of THOMAS SUTTON of Wexford, Ireland, COMTE DE CLONARD, France. Out of a Ducal Coronet Or, a demi-lion, double queued vert" (double tailed, green). John and Thomas, sons of Edward Sutton, emigrated to France to participate in Naval and Merchant ventures. John (Baron Clonard) commanded several French ships during the seven years war, Thomas revitalised the French East India Company (Compagnie Des Indes) as a trustee and shareholder and had many trading activities in foreign countries, He had close ties with many powerful politicians of the time and sent ships and money towards the American War of Independence.

He was granted Letters Patent of Nobility by Louis XV in 1763. His coat of arms bore a green Salamander in addition to the green double tailed lion of SUTTON.

Dimensions: Approx 11.5 Ins wide(29cm) 4.5 Inches(11.5cm) tall.

Condition: Good condition for age.
One tureen has a crack to the base. Rings well. The other with large chip to inner rim, generally good. Minor firing crack to handle. Minor regilding to shields. Please see all pictures.
