A superb Chinese armorial platter, made during the reign of Emperor Qianlong.
Very rare design, only two known services.

This service was made for his grandson, Harry Verelst (1733-1785). Crest is that of a ship's rudder. The central motif of a vase of flowers and the butterfly perhaps a reference to the family art-works, many contain both. He built Aston Hall, Yorkshire in about 1772. In 1767 Harry Verelst succeeded Robert, Lord Clive as Governor of Bengal, Fort William. 1771 Director of the East India Company. The only other service of this style was made for the Thornhills, also of South Yorkshire.
Illustrated painting is of Anne Verelst, his wife, by George Romney.
