Item Description
Here is a superb rare Chinese Qianlong armorial plate / platter made for the TEMPLER family of England. The Templer crest is not shown on this piece.
The surname is derived from historical associations with the Knights Templar Crusaders. A temple of Solomon within the arms. James Templer of Stover House, Teigngrace (Devon) with partners, contracted the building of Chatham dockyard in 1745 and Plymouth in 1758. He opened a granite quarry in Dartmoor and built Stover House, finished about 1780. Many Templers served in the EIC. His fourth son, George Templer (1755-1819) M.P of Shapwick House & Jungpore, India. Partner in the London & Middlesex bank. He entered the EIC civil service in India. Governor of Bengal-Fort William, In 1779 he was Factor and Contractor for Elephants. 1784 Appointed senior merchant. Sheriff of Calcutta 1818. His bank had insured several Eastindiamen ships and when they were lost, it was ruined. He returned to India at the age of 61 and died there. Some family members were lost when the Eastindiamen 'Halsewell' was wrecked in the English Channel, 1785. The scene was depicted in paintings by Turner. Many monuments in Teigngrace church mention the long association with the East India Company.
The arms have a martlett bird, probably a mark of cadency for the fourth son.
Measurements: 12.75 Inches by 9.5 Inches wide.
Condition: Perfect. Minor wear.
