Sir John Fellowes, Baron, (1670-1724) Director & sub Governor of the fated South Sea Company, was the son of a merchant, Willian Fellowes and his wife Susanna Coulson. Thomas Coulson, M.P was a director of the East India Company. Sir John lived at Carshalton House, Surrey, London. The house still stands, with its grounds designed by Charles Bridgeman in 1715. He improved the gardens, which include a lake (originially a canal) with an early 18thC water tower, plunge baths with Delft tiles & orangery, a folly bridge and hermitage building. Now maintained by a trust. He was implicated in the South Sea Bubble scandal of 1720, was heavily fined, losing ownership of the house, but was allowed to stay until his death in 1724 (without male heir). A monument to him at All Saints Church, Carshalton.
