A delightful and unusual circular armorial bookplate for Fytche of Thorpe Hall in the old english style.
Burkes Landed Gentry (1879 Edition) shows John ffytche (d.1855) and his son, John Lewis ffytche (1816-1903) as being the owners of Thorpe Hall, Elkington, nr. Louth, co. Lincolnshire. Of an ancient Essex family the Rev Stephen ffytche became the Rector of Louth in the early 19th century, having married the neice of John Green, Bishop of Lincoln. His eldest son John acquired Thorpe Hall and one of his daughters married George Tennyson, Rector of Somersby (and father of the Poet Laureate, Alfred, Lord Tennyson).
This bookplate measures 1" in diameter and is framed in matt black on a cream mount.
Condition: Very good.
