Item Description

V R Bibliothec Reg in Castel Windesor (Queen Victoria)

Armorial bookplate engraved on wood in two blocks, printed in black withe the background in red. Signed 'J West Mary Byfield Sc'.

Listed in Brian North Lee's "British Royal Bookplates" (see page 166 - plate 151) and described as "rare".

This was the largest of three bookplates ordered from J West in 1860 and was the first such series commissioned specifically for the Royal Library at Windsor.

In good condition and framed in matt black.


History

Provenance: From the collection of Sir Charles Travis Clay (1885-1978), Librarian of the House of Lords from 1922-1956.
