A 19th century ebulliant armorial bookplate for John Hanson Sperling A.M. coll.S.S.Trin: Cantab

Signed by Dolby, engraver of Regent St.

Listed in Franks. Ref.: F27727

Rev John Sperling (1825-94) was an Anglican Clergyman and antiquary. He was rector of St Margaret's Church, Wicken Bonhunt, Essex from 1856-62, during which time he rebuilt a large section of the church to his own design. He was also responsible for the "gruesome" rectory. He married the daughter of Sir George Barrow Bt.

He lated crossed to Rome and became a Catholic Priest in 1888.

He is also recorded as living at Cranhill nr Bath and Catton Hall, Norfolk.
