Item Description

a magnificent two-handled silver bowl, the body interior gilded and profusely decorated and chased with acanthus leaves above half fluting and set, obverse, with an oval panel depicting a farmer harvesting corn and, reverse, with an oval plaque with later inscription; between handles modelled as flying cherubs and standing on four feet designed as winged dragons.

History

Soldier, writer, balloonist and intrepid traveller Frederick Gustavus Burnaby (1842-1885) was one of the most celebrated and certainly most colourful military figures of the Victorian era. This newly discovered wine cooler was a gift on the occasion of his marriage to Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed on 25 June 1879.
