Burkes General Armory records two families of this name and states that one of them originated in the village of Whatley nr Frome in Somerset. Whatley is mentioned in the Domesday book when it was called Watelei (old English for Water Meadow).
Sir Joseph Whatley, KCH, was groom of the Bedchamber to both George IV and William IV. He was the son of Edward Whatley, Esq., Mayor of Bristol in 1768.
His arms are shown on the late 18th century bookplate below that predates his knighthood.
