History

From the collection of Charles Eamer Kempe

Thence by descent.

Charles Eamer Kempe (29 June 1837 – 29 April 1907) was an influential and important Victorian stained glass designer and manufacturer. His studios in London produced over 4,000 windows and also designs for altars and altar frontals, furniture and furnishings, lichgates and memorials that helped to define a later nineteenth century Anglican style. The list of English cathedrals containing examples of his work includes: Chester, Gloucester, Hereford, Lichfield, Wells, Winchester, York. The firm's trademark
was a golden garb or wheatsheaf, taken from Kempe's own coat of arms and visible in his crest.

From the 1870's Kempe renovated and redecorated an Elizabethan manor house near the village of Lindfield, West Sussex, where he installed a magnificent sundial in the garden, topped by his family crest.
