Item Description

Here is a superb pair of Spode plates, made for HAMILTON of CADZOW, BARDOWIE CASTLE, Milngavie, Scotland.

"Gules on a chevron between three cinquefoils argent a boars head". Recorded 1810. Elizabeth Hamilton, being the sole heir, married Thomas Buchanan of Spittel, who assumed the name of Hamilton. The Hamiltons have been designated "of Bardowie" since 1390. Bardowie Castle sits on the banks of Loch Bardowie.
