Item Description

This is a truly exceptional, museum-quality large framed micro mosaic plaque depicting the fresco "Aurora and the Hours", a masterpiece painted by the Italian artist Guido Reni in the early 17th century and exhibited in a famous Roman palace. It is a magnificent example of the art of micro mosaic work at its very best and has been superbly and skillfully crafted to the very highest standards imaginable. The subject matter shown in the original painting has been expertly and masterfully recreated by utilizing hundreds of tiny pieces of perfectly matched stones to form a scene of exquisite complexity and extraordinary beauty, a true work of art in its own right. Guido Reni's original fresco was painted to decorate the ceiling of the Casino of the Ruspigliosa Palace in Rome and is his interpretation of the quotation"....Again the Rosy Hours resume their flight/Obscured and lost in floods of Golden light". It shows Aurora, the Dawn, scattering flowers over the land and the ocean and accompanied by a putti representing Phosphor, the Morning Star. Behind them is The Chariot of the Sun drawn by 4 horses whose different colored coats represent the different degrees of light that appear before the Sun rises. The Chariot is driven by Apollo and is surrounded by various Hours of the Day. The original fresco measures almost 20 feet in length and the fact that it has been possible to accurately and cleverly reproduce such a monumental work of art in such a different medium requiring such pin point accuracy is a testament to the skill and talents of the craftmen responsible for this truly wonderful plaque. The colors of the stones have been beautifully and superbly matched and are as fresh and vibrant as when the plaque was first made. It is in superb condition trough out with no chops or cracks anywhere in the stone work. The plaque has been framed in an attractive wooden frame whose dark coloration beautifully enhances and enlivens the vivid hues of the stones used in the fabulous pictorial. This is a unique piece of superlative craftsmandhip and would make a distinctive and sophisticated design statement in any setting. The plaque measures approx. 17" X 17 3/4", including the frame the piece measures a total of approx. 22 1/4" X 13" high.
