This is a striking and unusual gilded bronze picture frame executed in an elegant neoclassical style. The shaped-rectangular frame has an outer border comprised of bands of beading and abstract leaf motifs, and a circular, inner border of reeding accented at intervals with leaves and with an inner band of delicate beading. The top of the frame features a central portrait medallion of a woman surrounded by a starburst design and flanked on each side with an abstracted leaf. These designs are supported on a border of scrolling anthemia and with a garland of bellflowers at each side. The cream silk background is further embellished with a central shell with a cascading garland of laurel leaves. At the bottom, a central lion’s mask is similarly enhanced with swagged laurel leaves. The back of the frame is coved in embroidered fabric and has a flush-mounted hinged stand also covered in matching fabric. The frame is in excellent condition with very fine decoration. The frame measures approx. 6 1/2" wide and approx. 10 1/2" high. The interior opening measures approx. 3 3/4" wide x 3 3/4" high. The very unique decoration of this beautiful frame makes it a truly special piece!
